ASMS Edition: Interest in Ambient Ionization Techniques Accelerates

Quick Links to Features:

Submitted abstracts on DART and atmospheric ionization.
As our users learn more about the capabilities of this new technique, we have seen a dramatic increase in accepted abstracts. We are very honored by the dedication and enthusiasm of all DART users, and appreciate their efforts to expand the knowledge and understanding of atmospheric pressure ionization techniques.

ASMS 2008 Survival Tips. Denver is appropriately known as the "Mile High City". For those of us who enjoy life near sea level, there are possible changes in behavior required to have an enjoyable and productive visit.

Graduate Student uses DART for organic synthesis experiments. During my education, the closest that chemistry students got to any mass spectrometer was to admire it through the window of a closed door. Today, many graduate students like Samson Francis of University of Tennessee Knoxville actively use DART for organic synthesis studies. Samson's story was told in the Spring Newsletter of the Chemistry Department.

DART Applications from Prague. Our friends at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague have released their presentation on food analysis with DART. The slide show reviews their findings in: the use of ammonium hydroxide as a CI agent for the determination of edible oils; characterization of honey; use of SPME in coffee characterization; pesticides in wheat, both in extracts and wheat kernels; and use of AutoDART for analysis of beverages. (This is a big file; be patient)

What is AccuTOF DART?

dartAccuTOF DART is our new ion source for rapid, non-contact analysis of materials at ambient pressure and at ground potential. This soft ionization technique is based on the reactions of electronic or vibronic excited-state species with reagent molecules and polar or nonpolar analytes.

DART is installed on the JEOL’s award winning AccuTOF high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS), to provide improved selectivity and accurate elemental composition assignment through exact mass measurements.

DART has been used for analysis of gases, liquids, and solids, and is uniquely designed for the direct detection of chemicals on surfaces. Time consuming sample preparation tasks such as solvent extraction are not required.

If AccuTOF DART can perform with these applications, imagine what it can do for you.

Introduction to Mass Spectrometry, Fourth Edition is Now Available

Introduction to MS Completely revised and updated, Introduction to Mass Spectrometry: Instrumentation, Applications, and Strategies for Data Interpretation, Fourth Edition provides an easy-to-read guide to the concept of mass spectrometry and demonstrates its potential and limitations. Unlike other mass spectrometry texts, this comprehensive reference provides systematic descriptions of the various types of mass analyzers and ionization, along with corresponding strategies for interpretation of data. Detailed coverage of inlet systems, vacuum systems, detectors, data systems and specialized techniques such as MS/MS and selected ion monitoring for quantitative analyses is included.

This multi-disciplined text covers the fundamentals as well as recent advance in this topic, providing need-to-know information for researchers in many disciplines including pharmaceutical, environmental and biomedical analysis who are utilizing mass spectrometry.
